Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ

Re: Letter of Convocation, Diocesan Synod 2026

After consultation with both the Bishop’s Council of Priests and the Diocesan Pastoral Council, I formally announce the convocation of the Synod in the Archdiocese of Adelaide.

Our recent participation in Diocesan Assemblies, Regional Assemblies, the Australian Plenary Council and the Synod of Bishops on Synodality in Rome provides a strong foundation from which to launch this Diocesan Synod. This Synod will discern five key themes that have emerged through the previous consultations and will result in formalised proposals and concrete actions that will guide our Diocesan pastoral strategy.

A liturgy of Convocation will be held on the Solemnity of Pentecost on Sunday, 8th June 2025 at 11:00am, St Francis Xavier Cathedral, Adelaide. All are invited to attend this celebration.

Over the next 12 months there will be opportunities for everyone to engage with the key themes, formation and prayer. A selection process for member delegates will begin in June 2025.

The Synod and preparation for the Synod delegates will take place at the following times:

  1. Preparation gathering for delegate members Saturday, 14th March 2026, 10:00am-4:00pm
  2. Session One – Archdiocese opening Mass, Full delegate day - Friday, 29th May 2026 at 6:00pm Saturday, 30th May 2026 at 10:00am-4:00pm
  3. Session Two – Full delegate day – Saturday, 27th June 2026 at 10:00am-4:00pm

I have appointed a Preparatory Commission chaired by Fr Dean Marin, Vicar General and supported by Sarah Moffatt and Peter Bierer as Lead Facilitators.

As we journey towards this Synod, I ask you to pray for the Synod and its preparation and encourage you all to be involved where you are able. Updates and information will be located at the Diocesan Synod website http://togetherontheway.au

In Domino
Archbishop Patrick O'Regan
