Safeguarding training

Part of the role of the Safeguarding Operations Team is to deliver safeguarding education and training programs to ensure all Archdiocesan clergy, religious, employees, and volunteers have the tools and information they need to implement our Safeguarding framework in parishes and to create safe and welcoming environments for all children, young people, and those who are vulnerable.

Safeguarding Training is provided to those who are mandated notifiers under the Children and Young People (Safety) Act 2017. Mandated notifiers include all clergy, religious, employees, and volunteers of the Church.

The training programs teach participants about the effects of child abuse and neglect, how to recognise the signs and indicators of abuse and neglect, and when and how to notify the statutory authorities.

Further, the Archdiocese is guided by and promotes the South Australian Charter of the Rights and Freedoms of Vulnerable Adults and, accordingly, our training programs also incorporate best practice for protecting vulnerable individuals from harm, including what to do if abuse or neglect is suspected and how to report concerns to the South Australian Adult Safeguarding Unit who may conduct an investigation if required.

All Archdiocesan clergy, religious, and employees are required to complete a full Safeguarding Training Session followed by refresher courses every three years. All regular volunteers are also required to attend a Safeguarding Session with subsequent refresher training three yearly.
