Parish groups

  • Parish Pastoral Council
  • Refugee Committee – Outreach, support and hospitality to our newly settled sisters and brothers.  Those who have fled from their homeland to make a fresh start are welcomed.
  • St Eufemia Society – Celebrates the Feast of St Eufemia and shares Mass and lunch on the 1st Sunday of the month.
  • Wise Owls Seniors Group – 55 years+ – Gathers for social outings, fitness, craft, book club.
  • Preca Community – The vision and mission of the Preca Community is ‘to seek holiness with an emphasis on learning and teaching faithful others so that they in turn will make Jesus known and loved through the whole world’. Click here to visit the Preca Community website.
  • Come & See Youth Group – Aims to form young followers of Jesus and to create a faith community of like-minded young people. The group is led by youth leaders who are Members or Associates of Preca Community together with parents. The targeted age bracket is from 10 to 22.

History

The parish dates back to 1896 when the first Mass in the west of Adelaide was celebrated in St Saviour’s Church at Brompton. The church still stands today but no longer used as a church.

Key dates in the development of the parish include:

1913  The first Missionaries of the Sacred Heart Priests and Brothers arrived at the invitation of
Archbishop John O’Reilly. The MSCs still continue to administer and serve the people of the parish

1929  St Columba Church was established in Flinders Park and renamed to St Joseph’s Church in 1949. 
It served the community until 2014.

1924  St Saviour’s Church, on Port Road Hindmarsh was officially opened and renamed as Sacred Heart
Church during 1950.

1928  Students from the first parish school, St Joseph’s at Brompton, moved to their current school on
Grange Road, West Hindmarsh.  Click here to visit the St Joseph's Catholic School website.

1950  St Joseph’s School at Flinders Park, staffed by the Sisters of St Joseph, opened with 35 students. 
During the week the church/school/hall was divided into classrooms by a partition. The school closed in
2008.

1951  School/Church dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary was built and opened in Brompton and staffed by the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.  Click here to visit the Immaculate Heart of Mary school website.

1953 Preca Community officially starts ministry at Brompton. Daily faith formation classes at IHM Chapel held by Members of Preca.

1954  The establishment of St Michael’s College, staffed by the De La Salle Brothers, was opened.
