Early Life

Peter McCabe was born at Beherna, Virginia in Co Clare, Ireland on November 25, 1918. He was educated at Old Castle, Co Meath. His ecclesiastical studies were undertaken at St Patrick’s College, Carlow, and this is where he was ordained priest on June 3, 1945.

Work in South Australia

Fr Peter arrived in Adelaide on January 1, 1947. After a very short stay in Adelaide he was appointed Assistant Priest at Mount Gambier which he took up on January 19. After nearly six years in Mount Gambier he was appointed Assistant Priest at Brighton on December 20, 1952.

In April 1957 he took a month’s leave travelling back to Ireland to visit family and friends. And on the following year on January 4, he was appointed Parish Priest of Tailem Bend. Sadly this was to last only a year.

Fr Peter was a good friend of Fr Martin Comey, then Parish Priest of Tranmere.

Early Death

Fr McCabe died in Calvary Hospital on January 13, 1959 at the early age of 40 years. His good friend Martin Comey died four days later, aged 45 years.

Funeral Mass for Fr Peter McCabe was celebrated in St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral on January 15, 1959 and he was buried in West Terrace Catholic Cemetery.

May he rest in peace.
