Fr Eneas Noone

Biography:

Early Life

Eneas Noone was born in Ballycarrick, Claremorris in County Mayo, Ireland on September 23, 1896. He was educated at All Hallows College, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree. He was ordained priest at All Hallows on June 19, 1921.

Life in Adelaide

Soon after his ordination he left Ireland to come to Australia, arriving in Adelaide on October 19, 1921. On his arrival he was appointed Assistant Priest in the Cathedral parish where he became acquainted with life in Australia. Three months later he went to the Goodwood parish where he remained for seven years as Assistant Priest.

On February 1, 1929 he was appointed Parish Priest of Riverton and retained that post for the next 13 years. On January 3, 1942 he went to Spalding as Parish Priest, but after six months he moved to Balaklava where he remained for 12 years. In January 1954 he was appointed Parish Priest in the neighbouring parish of Hamley Bridge where he was to remain for the rest of his active ministry – a total of 26 years there.

Retirement

In January 1980, now being aged 84 years, he retired to live at Villa Beovich at Myrtle Bank, with the title of Pastor Emeritus.  Some years later his health deteriorated he moved to the Lourdes Valley Nursing Home where he died on June 24, 1987, aged 90 and 66 years as a priest.

Requiem Mass was celebrated in the Loured Valley Chapel on June 24, 1987 by Archbishop Faulkner, in the presence of retired Archbishop James Gleeson, a large number of priests and many residents of Lourdes Valley. There were also many former parishioners from Hamley Bridge where he had been Parish Priest for 26 years.

In his homily Archbishop Faulkner spoke of the many Irish priests, sisters and brothers who left their homes in Ireland to come to Australia and serve in this Archdiocese. To all of them we should be extremely grateful. The Archbishop spoke of Fr Noone’s long and devoted service to his people. In his last seven years at Lourdes Valley he was very patient during the years of his declining health and he never complained although he suffered considerable pain towards the end. Following the Funeral Mass his remains were buried at Centennial Park Cemetery.

May he rest in peace.
