The Southern Cross – July 2017
Communicating a timeless message
I’ve always been looking for new ways of sharing the message of Jesus with our people and others in the most efficient and wonderful way using all of the new opportunities that are presented to us through developments in personal media.
So I am pleased to inform you that the Archdiocese is changing the way it delivers the latest news and information to the South Australian community.
The flagship of our communication efforts – the award winning newspaper The Southern Cross – will continue to be published monthly in print and distributed to all parishes and agencies. However, in recognition of the changing needs of news consumers, in particular younger people, and the development of direct and instantaneous forms of communication through digital technology, we will be moving to a daily digital media platform.
The introduction of The Southern Cross online news site will enable us to post stories on a daily basis and provide our readers with up-to-the-minute coverage of issues and events related to the Catholic Church. The site will link into national and international Catholic media sites as well as provide extensive local coverage across all aspects of Church life – from health and social welfare to education and faith formation.
Subscribers to the free online website for The Southern Cross will receive fortnightly emails directing them to the new site and they will also be able to access it at any time to keep abreast of what’s happening in the Church.
From this month, the flipbook version of The Southern Cross will no longer be produced. However, you will still be able to read much of the same content of the printed version on the news website.
This new initiative is expected to significantly increase our reach to not only regular church-goers but to those committed to the values of the Catholic faith, including the 35,000 families who choose to send their children to Catholic schools.
On a personal note, I am looking forward to the opportunity to communicate more directly with you through using these new methods of communication, including our Find a Mass app which provides updates about important events in the Archdiocese and in parishes. I would like to be able to reach into your lives and lead you into a deeper union with Jesus as we live in the world today.
